Try Speed Skating

  • Step 2. Learn to Speed Skate (LTSS) programs run for 6 weeks. Once enrolled into a Learn to Speed Skate (LTSS) program, coaches will develop your skills.

The following information highlights what to expect from a LTSS program. If you have questions, and/or would like further information on LTSS programs, please contact  programs@obrienicehouse.com.au

Learn to Speed Skate Program (LTSS) is designed to take skaters from beginners to competitive club racers. There are 6 proficiency levels in total. Each proficiency level takes 6 weeks to complete. The total program runs for 36 weeks. Skaters progress at their own pace and can drop in or out of the program at any time.

Skill Proficiency is assessed at the end of each 6 weeks period.  Each Proficiency Period focuses on the development of different skills. Badges are awarded to skaters who have mastered the skills.

The Learn to Speed Skate Program (LTSS)  program has been designed with flexibility in mind, it can accommodate:

  • drop-in skaters

  • those who cannot commit to the 6 weeks term

  • skaters who wish to take as long as they require to achieve each level

  • more advanced skaters, because levels can be ‘leap-frogged’ based on existing skills.

Speed skating requires the use of both edges of the blade to maximise speed and efficiency, thus intermediate and advanced skaters who are looking to improve their technique regularly join the  intermediate and more advanced levels of the Learn to Speed Skate (LTSS) program.

For example,  figure skaters and hockey players have benefited from these classes because of the focus on technical drills to improve edge control, stroke/push, body position, balance and efficiency.

Learn to Speed Skate (LTSS) coaches have a significant amount of experience and have helped many skaters fulfil their speed skating dreams, including reaching Olympic Games.
